Free Trade is not trade, it is not free and certainly not "green." Free Trade is based on moving factories and production from place to place anywhere in the world for the sake of never ending cheaper labor. This is not trade as historically practiced and defined. Workers are the main commodity being traded. And everytime a factory or farm is moved, it leaves a burn out community behind. Some are left worst off than before the factories came.<br />Free Trade also thrives by companies seeking ways to escape environmental and other regulations. This opens the door to more and not less "dirty" manufacturing. On top of this, Free Trade is a main culprit behind pollution with the long haul ocean, air, rail, and truck shipping plus all the extra packaging and containers required. See an example of the "8000 Mile Energy Saving Light Bulb." This product has to travel 8000 miles to get to markets in the U.S. from China where they are manufactured under "dirty" conditions with mercury out in the open. Most of the workers are women who work many hours a day. Some are pregnant and get cut in the manufacturing process while the mercury is out in the open. Hopefully, the Pope and other advocates will make Free Trade a major cause and effect behind the global economic crisis and the pollution of the environment.
